It is the most populous city in Arizona with a population of 1,658,422 people, and is the fifth largest city in the U.S., the most populous state capital in the U.S., and the only state capital with a population of more than one million residents. 4,584,000 residents make up what is considered the current metro area population and Phoenix tops the nation in population growth for the fifth year in a row. In the early years of development the Phoenix economy focused on the “5C’s”, cotton, cattle, citrus, copper and climate, but today the top industries are Real Estate, Finance and Insurance, Manufacturing, Retail trade, Health Care and Tourism. A sprawling metropolitan area, it is bounded by beautiful mountains and graced with blue skies and sunshine approximately 300 days of the year. A mixture of mountain trails and city lights, historic buildings and modern structures, museums, nightlife and fine dining, in Phoenix you’ll find something for everyone. Greater Phoenix, comprised of more than 20 cities and towns is about the size of Delaware, and is known as the Valley of the Sun. There are 15 urban villages: Ahwatukee, Alhambra, Camelback East, Central City, Deer Valley, Desert View, Encanto, Estrella, Laveen, Maryvale, North Gateway, North Mountain, Paradise Valley, Rio Vista, and South Mountain. Surrounded by mountain parks and preserves, resorts, golf courses, national forest and American Indian communities, it is a sports Mecca boasting a professional football team, the Arizona Cardinals, two professional basketball teams, the Phoenix Suns (NBA) and the Phoenix Mercury (WNBA), a professional baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, a professional hockey team, the Arizona Coyotes, home to the Cactus League spring training season for 15 major league baseball teams, NASCAR racing at Phoenix International Raceway, horse racing at Turf Paradise and more. In addition, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy cycling, hiking, tubing down Salt River, boating on Lake Pleasant, Saguaro Lake or Canyon Lake, hot air ballooning and golfing at over 200 golf courses. In addition, because of it's proximity to American Indian communities, a number of large casinos are nearby and offer gaming and entertainment venues.

Public education in the Phoenix area is provided by 33 school districts. Higher education is supplied by Arizona State University, Maricopa County Community College District (10 community colleges), Barrow Neurological Institute, Grand Canyon University, the University of Phoenix and more. As for infrastructure, Phoenix is served by Sky Harbor International Airport, one of the ten busiest airports in the US, and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and multiple private airports. Valley Metro provides public transportation via buses and light rail. Phoenix ranks first in the nation in the quality of its urban freeways, and while being the sixth most populous city in the nation, Phoenix's freeways do not suffer from the same type of congestion seen in other large cities. In fact, in a recent study, there is not a single stretch of freeway in Phoenix ranked in the 100 worst freeways for either congestion or unreliability due to the extensive freeway system and the street grid system.
